Perdue's Career and College: Ready, Set, Go! Funded by Race to the Top Grant

Gov. Bev Perdue this week announced North Carolina will receive approximately $400 million in federal Race to the Top grant money. The award will fund continued implementation of Perdue’s Career and College: Ready, Set, Go! program, including:


  • recruiting and retaining quality teachers and administrators,
  • a comprehensive turnaround plan for low performing schools, and
  • 21st century technology for assessing students’ needs.

My Career Voyage Launches Re-Employment Workshop - Updated Aug. 5

My Career Voyage's (MCV) first re-employment workshop set sail July 20 for a 5-day career planning voyage at Trinity Baptist Church, Raleigh. Career explorers met from 9 a.m.-noon for hands-on training in using self-assessment, career exploration, and job search tools to chart their course. The self-assessment and exploration tools helped participants to better understand themselves and to find occupations of interest.

When Sara King of Raleigh, North Carolina, heard about the Jobs For Life program offered at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh, she thought it would be a good opportunity to improve her job search skills. She was in the midst of a career transition after moving from Virginia. The farm she owned and operated there was not generating enough income. She moved to Raleigh to be closer to family and because she believed Raleigh offered more job opportunities. The area in Virginia where King lived “was in a downward spiral,” she said. “It was economically deprived.”

After attending two years at the University of North Carolina, Rob Phillips was unsure what occupation he wanted to pursue. Phillips took some time off from school until he decided which career path to take. He worked in various jobs including a retail sales position with a local music store that he held for ten years.
